Counting Sheep In Ireland

Blogger Deb Chapman

KilkennyB&BIf you follow this blog, you know that I was looking forward to a trip to Ireland. As most vacations do, it went by far too quickly.   I also mentioned the various methods I planned to hopefully sleep during the overnight transatlantic flight. Unfortunately, none of them worked and we landed at 5 AM local time without a wink of sleep.

Our itinerary involved renting a car at Dublin Airport and driving two hours to spend the night at our first stop, Kilkenny.  We had a rather “bumpy” start, when two miles from the airport, while trying to get used to driving on the left hand side of the road (in the dark), we blew a tire. In addition, one of the connections for our GPS broke and we had no cell phone service. My husband changed the tire and we made our way back to the car rental agency for a replacement vehicle. I might also mention that he managed to fix the GPS connection with a piece of tin foil! #macgyver!

We were back on the road! As a side note they aren’t kidding when they say there are sheep everywhere in Ireland. You can even spot them not far out of Dublin right off the main motorway. More on sheep in the road in a future blog

By the time we got to Kilkenny we were pretty beat. It was only 9AM but we went to our first B&B hoping to just stow our luggage. Our host was wonderful and she said she happened to have a room that was all ready and if we didn’t mind twin beds, we could have it right away! Are you kidding! SOLD!

After a rather rough morning, and suffering from jet lag, beds never looked so good! Check out the crisp white sheets and cozy plaid throws.

We took much needed naps then forced ourselves out of our beds to see the town. Kilkenny is known as Ireland’s Mediaeval Capital, and offers a mixture of great pubs, charming streetscapes lovely shops and a rich cultural heritage. We toured Kilkenny Castle, an abbey, and ate pub food and drank pints in one of the oldest pubs in Ireland, Kytelers Inn, which dates back to 1263.

We made it an early evening, went back to our B&B and turned in. I, for one nodded right off and, for the first time in ages, slept right through the night…ahh. No counting sheep needed!

Watch for more on the rest of our adventure coming soon.
